Aaaaand we have new character!

The delay on this page was because I have an actual paid project at the moment and everything else is taking a back seat. I will be taking a brief hiatus while I give my full attention to it, so this page will be it for a few weeks. My apologies, guys - come check on me in mid-April!

I love your take on Medwyn! He reminds me a bit of Idris Elba (but maybe that's because I just saw Thor Ragnarok). Anyway, as much as I'm sorry you're going on hiatus, I know that getting paid projects are better for long-term longevity (and better for your career). Congrats!

Ooh, I’d love Elba to play this role!

He looks very Noah-esque, especially considering the first humans came from Africa. I love how Alexander brings in a Noah/Utnapishtim character here; it really elevates the mythic tone.

We'll miss you while you're on hiatus. Knock 'em dead on your other project!

Precisely my thought! In trying to decide how to make Medwyn look like..well, like not-Dallben, it occurred to me that if there were ever a character whose ethnicity could be a matter of mystery, it would be him. (Not that you couldn’t do it with any one of them, in theory; this is fantasy after all, but in a story based on a proto-British myth a dark-skinned character is unexpected at the very least.) I like the thought that he’s ambiguous, clearly Not From Around Here, and the tie-in to the flood myth is just a perfect opportunity.

They did, BUT some of the first ones apparently looked a lot like Cheddar Man (dug up in Cheddar recently, but when alive apparently not yet adapted to cloudy and northern Europe yet with the remarkable lack of pigment and all that helps with vitamin D processing in such conditions) or Polynesians or the Khoi-San, with the eye slits and somewhat lighter colour. There's a lot of progress in genetics tracing our ancestry, recently and correlating it to morphology.

So this is why Tom Bombadil never made it to the Fellowship movie, he went native in Prydain!

If Medwyn starts leaping around singing his own name like a lunatic, we’ll know for sure.

He's never made it into any of them. Clearly, the Celtic throw-back amongst all the Germanics is due for a series of two or three films, or the last two, with the first being all about the Barrow Downs. ;-)

Great debut -- and a wonderful choice of character design.

And best of luck with your paying gig!

What a great panel to leave us with! I wasn't sure what your take on Medwyn would be like, as there's isn't a ton of detail about him in the book (come to think of it, only a few characters get detailed descriptions of their appearance) so it leaves a lot to the imagination and I love what you've done here. We'll all be anxiously awaiting the return! Good luck with your other project.

Thanks! I wasn’t sure what fan reaction would be, honestly, but if anybody didn’t like it, they’ve kept it to themselves. Glad for the overwhelmingly positive response!

Stunned is the right word...when you go from thinking you are one chomp away from a wolf’s digestive tract to seeing some big old dude materialize out of the wilderness, I think that’s the appropriate reaction! Lol

Congrats on a paid project! Also Medwyn! As some one mentioned above very Idris Elba.
I always liked Medwyn, part of the world but separate as well. When I first read the books as a kid this part stuck with me, it really helped elevate the world-building aspects. There were other forces out there than just the affairs of humans.

True! Nice hints of histories and mythologies unrelated to the present one, serves to enrich things in a way that doesn’t overpower the story.

Very nice page; I really like your take on Medwyn. It makes perfect sense that a character derived from the deluge myths of the ancient Middle East should look like a man of the culture where those myths were born. I hope your other project goes well, and look forward to more of Medwyn when you're able to resume work on the comic.

I'm rather looking forward to the radio adaptation. Such a pity they couldn't announce a release date, so I could write it down on my planner.

Yes, it's hard to wait, isn't it? I'm impatient myself. If you know anyone who knows sound editing, message me, because that's what we are waiting on at this point, and the editor is super busy with projects that he can legally profit from. Fanwork, sadly, has to take second priority for those of us who enjoy roofs over our heads and food on the table. More's the pity!

LOL well, my secret is I have a sugar daddy husband who pays the bills while I raise the kids, so I don't advertise and can refuse jobs I don't want. :P It's a charmed life. This was my first chance to do a children's book, though, which I've always wanted to do, and it came from a businessman who actually understands how paying your illustrator works (unlike all the well-meaning but clueless people who "have this great idea" and think they can pay you in royalties "once the book gets published"), so it was a welcome opportunity and I'm enjoying it.

Hey, I love reading your story, and I was wondering. How much longer until the next update? I hope you don't take this as pushy or anything, just a lover of Prydain wanting to see the hidden valley. P.S. I love your take on this! So much better than Disney's. Thank You!

Thanks so much! And I understand - I am anxious to get back to it too!

I am nearly done with my current project; in fact I believe I will be able to wrap it up in another day or two, and will be right back into the comic after that. With good luck I may even have a page ready by the end of this week - but if not, next week for sure!
