My head canon is that Fflewddur is like the bachelor uncle who genuinely loves kids because he's a big kid himself. The only thing he really misses about being king is playing with the village children, marching them through the hills like the pied piper on imaginary quests, having mock battles, and telling them stories so outrageous they shriek with laughter while his harp strings snap continuously. He's the prime entertainment at every big event where the parents can finally relax around the bonfire or whatever because the kids are all hanging out with the king. It probably drives his Chief Steward crazy, in the most affectionate way possible.

I love your head canon for Fflewddur and have adopted it as my own now, especially since I'm probably a bit more like him than I'd like to admit. ;)
Now, if only I could play the harp and had his knack for storytelling...

The adorableness on this page has killed me, only to resurrect me and kill me again.

Ha... I AM Fflewddur. I never had a fictional patron before. Don't know why it never occurred to me until now. =)

Idk, I think his chief steward probably does more of the actual running the kingdom than he does!

Great job with this! I also love the term “head cannon.” LA’s minimalistic writing style leaves sooo much room to dream up character backstories and behind the scenes action, and it's fun to do. I’ve thought up some good ones myself but I venture not as many as you have :)

Fflewddur is a great patron to have, he's his own man to an admirable degree. How many kings would have the courage to not be crushed by their responsibilities, and would risk it all to follow their heart playing the harp and wandering the countryside? Sounds simple enough but only an exceptional personality could actually make such a courageous leap. But I'm sure his occasional subjects loved him all the more for it. Another beautiful page!

That’s true. But of course we have frequent real proof of Fflewddur’s courage in a pinch...culminating with honestly one of the most heartbreaking sacrifices in the whole story. I love him so much it’s ridiculous.

That is a great point. I've always loved FFlewddur. It's important to note when his strings do and don't break.
When he boasts of achievements they break. (I tend to think because he rounds up some.) When he makes claims of bravery the harp is silent.

I also noticed on the umpteenth re-read that when he introduces himself to Taran as "a bard of the harp"...the harp does not contradict him.
Seems it actually has a better bead on his true identity than the council does.

I never thought of Ffludder as Uncle, but can totally see him as the one the parents drop the kiddos off with so they can have a break.

I love this! I love this sooo much! Awww, it's nice to see Fflewddur at home with the children, and at ease with them. He truly is a big kid. I often wonder if the people of his kingdom, yes make do without him as he admitted, but have a fond attachment to him. As if his childlike exuberance earns him a loyalty most kings can only dream of having among their people.
Your artwork is lovely, and it fits perfectly with the warm summer breeze right now that is blowing in across the farm lands into my window!
Thanks for the smile!

His Lordship greets his crofters and is met by their children, especially those at that age who most resemble dogs, even puppies!
Love it. I've a kid in college, but I am told by her friends that I was the best ever "tickle monster" back in elementary school, even, occasionally, middle school. I have to say that I really miss that.

I have loved this series since I was a kid, and to see your work and effort to bring it to life in a graphic format, makes my heart smile. I hope you have the chance / time to continue working on it. Thanks for making my day!

I did too, or family friends. I miss having folks like that in my life and my kids' lives. We aren't as connected now.
