Again, I love your Gurgi character design! My mental image was a bit uncanny valley but this is great.

Yeah the versions I have seen that make him too human are really off-putting for me. I get a lot of crit that mine swings too far the other way, but I’d rather err in that side.

Excellent work with Gurgi - I'm always amazed how you integrate the human and canine aspects of his physiology in action/movement scenes.

Also: I love Taran's boots.

LOL Taran's boots are pretty cool. I have a similar pair.

I get fonder of Gurgi as I go on, though I still don't really love drawing him, tbh - all that gray fur gets pretty tedious. But his poses are definitely fun to dream up - one character who doesn't have human inhibitions and wears his emotions openly...yep, he really is a dog, haha.

They should just give him a helmet. Problem solved.

These are the best illustrations of Gurgi yet! And the best Gurgi panel all around. I love how he is depicted here.

I tend to avoid him when I can bc I don't enjoy depicting all the fur, but every now and then he gets center stage. :)

Oh my lord, the way you drew Gurgi’s sweet hopeful face in those last few panels just killed me and brought me back to life. Bless his poor tender head <3

Expression directly from my dog in his most ingratiating moments. Usually when I'm holding food.

I love Taran's body language on this page. The way you drew his expressions and his body here expresses something pretty essential about the character, I think.

BoT and BC Taran is still under the delusion that he's a warrior at heart, but the truth is he's much more of a builder, and he finds his highest good not even in protecting others (as the part of Fflewddur that isn't an artist does) but in healing and nurturing them. His best moments, even here--and when I think he's happiest--is when he is healing the physical and spiritual hurts of others. Extending companionship and purpose to an angry, lonely young girl; tending to the wounds of a hairy whatsit and then giving this sad creature, neither man nor fully beast, his first place to belong. And other thing he hasn't gotten around to yet.

I'm not artist enough to know how you express love, contentment with what one is doing, and sense of purpose in a curve of a person's arm or the expression on his face. But you've managed it here.

Thanks.

I love how most people are all "Oh, I love this Gurgi page" and you are all about what's going on with Taran. :) (Neither reaction is wrong, I hasten to add - it's just nice to have the variety and thoughtfulness.)

He really is a nurturer at heart. One of many reasons to love him. I go out of my way to show all of them being physically affectionate and expressive - something we don't get to see in the books, so it's my invention really, but Taran is not much of a talker so I think it fits to have him in particular communicate deep things nonverbally. I picture him being very tender with his own kids one day. :)

It's not art as much as it is acting; some artists draw very well but their characters don't emote; others can get a range of emotions from stick figures. I am a closeted drama nerd, and I love that in a very real sense, this project allows me to "play" each of these characters simultaneously. I literally do sit around saying the dialog and miming the action a lot.

Well said...Yes I am impressed with how Gurgi is expressed in this panel, but especially the look on his face as he begins to comprehend the kindness Taran has planned for him. So yes the panel is really more about the character of Taran, and Gurgi is a reflection of that.

We love a good puppy Gurgi. Ugh, only imagine what Gurgi looked like as a pup, those big ears, so cute! I also like the character growth that the Master, Lloyd Alexander, subtly wrote for Gurgi throughout the Book of Three, and I have to say you are doing it masterful justice! Also, I loved the little background image of Fflewddur smiling down at Eilonwy, while Taran pets a contented Gurgi…. great body language there.
