Anybody wonder how exactly she's able to lift and slide around these massive flagstones that probably weigh a few hundred pounds?
....me too.

I always figured Eilonwy spent a lot of her time with Achren running around and climbing things she wasn't supposed to. I mean, she's really strong for a 12-to-13-year-old. Journeying in the woods for weeks isn't exactly an easy thing to do, and she seems to manage (mostly) just fine.

I agree she's probably reasonably fit, but it still defies reason that a 13yo girl could lift and move a slab of stone that big -which leaves the possibility that the stone itself is on some type of mechanical track, or that she has some kind of supernatural ability to manipulate it.

It's probably one of those fake hollow rocks you buy to hide your keys in, only much larger.

The underside could be hollowed out so that it's only an inch or so thick -- then it would probably only weigh thirty or forty pounds.

I hope she managed to make it indistinguishable from before - not that they will find her tunnels...

"It's like handing them a toad".
I get the feeling she's done that to someone before...

And see toads are just so adorable I don't know how anybody could be offended...
But maybe she's referring to their showing up on pillows, or inside shoes, or underneath one's dinner plate, which has probably all happened in her environment, at some point or other.

I'm with you on the appeal of toads; in Achren's case, I'd sooner hand her a krait, if I could figure out how to handle the thing without getting bitten myself.

This had to be a challenging chapter because it basically takes place in a dungeon cell, and it introduces a key character, who for much of the chapter, is only seen through the cell's bars. The characters were beautifully drawn, and their expressions really show so much about them. Their conversations ranged from funny to very poignant. I thought it was very well done. I'm excited to see where their trip through the passageways leads them.

Thank you! There was a challenge inherent in handling a scene whose action was so limited - on the other hand, it made it far easier to concentrate on the nuances of expression that were so important in this intro, and it's one of the things I love about this project - that I have the freedom to take the time and concentrate on such moments, where I suspect an editor of traditional comics would demand I pick up the pace. But these books, though they are full of action and adventure, are not really about the sword-and-sorcery...they're about this kid's heart, and everything that turns him into the man he becomes by the end, and it's a beautiful thing to focus upon. I still love this chapter, and if I ever go back for a reboot, there isn't a whole lot I would change about it.
Action picking up now! The next few chaps are quite the whirlwind. Enjoy!
